Naming the new 7-9 school in Cold Lake

Consultation has concluded

In September 2023, the current Cold Lake Middle School will become the new public Grade 7-9 school in Cold Lake. Students from all areas of the city will go there before heading to Cold Lake High School for grades 10-12.

In November, a focus group of students from Art Smith Aviation Academy, Cold Lake Middle School and Nelson Heights Middle School spent a day discussing what the new school might look and feel like and what would make all students feel welcome. One of their suggestions was to have a new name for the school. The students felt this was an important part of building a school community they can all identify with and build a sense of belonging for all students.

In January, students at the three schools brainstormed possible names, reviewed the submissions and narrowed down the options, and then voted to determine which name they wanted to recommend to the NLPS Board of Trustees. The name they selected was Cold Lake Junior High. The students made their request to the Board on Feb. 9 and on Feb. 23, the Board voted to adopt the new name in principle and to seek input from the community.

Under Administrative Procedure 546 - Naming New Facilities, a 30-day feedback process i required prior to the Board making a final decision about the name of the school.

The AP also identifies that:

"School and facility names are to be chosen which:

  • Identify the community in which the school is located,
  • Identify the program offered within the facility (e.g. elementary, middle, high school),
  • Recognize the contribution to education by an employee, resident or family associated with the local community,
  • Honour the memory of a famous Albertan,
  • Are named after a Canadian geographic or historic location,
  • Reflect an environmental landscape, or
  • Are a symbolic name representing cultures and/or beliefs of part or all of the community."

We have created the discussion forums below for the community to provide the Board with feedback on the new name proposed for the new 7-9 school in Cold Lake (currently Cold Lake Middle School). To participate, you will need to register with the site.
