2021-2022 School Calendar
Consultation has concluded
NLPS is seeking feedback on its draft 2021-2022 School Calendar.
The proposed calendar includes three Professional Development Days that have not been included in previous division calendars. These are days when there will be no school for students while staff participate in professional learning opportunities. They were added to the calendar to provide staff with time to focus on professional development related to the division's mental health and numeracy priorities, school-based priorities and upcoming curriculum changes.
One of the PD days will take place in August, prior to students starting school. The other two will be on November 26 and March 10. This will reduce the overall number of instructional days from 180 to 178. There are a total of 192 operational days, an increase from 190.5 in the current year.
As with previous calendars, the 2021-2022 draft school calendar includes four-day weekends coinciding with Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, and Victoria Day, a two-week break at Christmas, and a spring break that coincides with Easter.
Previous feedback from stakeholders has indicated support for Family Fridays and a preference to avoid early dismissal days. There are a total of six Family Fridays included in the draft calendar and no early dismissal days.
The calendar was developed by a committee that includes two school administrators and two representatives from the Alberta Teachers' Association local. They reviewed a number of factors that impact the school calendar including provincial diploma exam and achievement test schedules, average number of instructional and operational days in other Alberta school jurisdictions, the requirement to have 950 hours of instructional time at the elementary school level and 1,000 hours in high school, and the caps on instructional and assignable time for teachers.
To share your thoughts about the draft calendar, please send an email to feedback.nlsd@nlsd.ab.ca before Friday, February 5. The Board will review the feedback received prior to considering final approval of the calendar. The finalized calendar will be shared with all stakeholders once it is approved by the Board.
